Here at onthecover, we know how lucky we are to be able to WFH; not everyone can transfer their work from office to home. But just because we can WFH, doesn’t mean we know how to WFH. Sitting on the couch, laptop on knees, Netflix in the background… we know, we know, not good habits.

When done well, a space dedicated to work can mean the difference between a successful, energised day, and a frustrating, unproductive one. You can’t underestimate the importance of a calm, cute space that makes you actually want to sit and work all day.

A home office can take many forms. You might be lucky enough to have an entire room dedicated to working, a cozy nook tucked away in a corner, or the edge of a dining table or breakfast bar. Whatever situation you’re in, removing distractions and increasing energy is the goal – a few cute accessories won’t hurt, either.

Whether you’re studying for upcoming university exams or getting ready for a zoom pitch with your manager, an organised area is essential for a day of hard work. To find out how to create a successful WFH space, we asked IKEA Canberra Interior Design Manager Amy Hare for advice.

“When setting up your home office, invest in flexible and mobile storage. We understand that it’s not always possible to set up a workspace in a spare room or dedicated space, and sometimes your workspace might also double as a living space, like the dining table.” 

If that’s the case, Amy recommends using a mobile storage unit. “It’s a place where you can keep all your essential work belongings and move into any area of the home. When you’re done, simply tuck the trolley away in its original spot. This also helps maintain a decluttered and organised space, which contributes to a productive workspace.”

The right light

Setting up your home office near as much natural light is ideal, but not always possible. Using a well-placed mirror to reflect light into your space will work wonders for your mood and productivity.
